Fujian, China - Guide to the regions of China

Fujian, China

The Fujian region of China lies on the southeast coast and borders Jiangxi to the west, Zhejiang to the north, and Guangdong to the south. To the east of Fujian across the Taiwan Strait is Taiwan; to the southeast is the South China Preparing food in FujianSea and to the northeast is the East China Sea.

The Fujian coastline is quite rugged and loops in an out of bays. Off shore there are many islands including Nanri Island, Haitan Island, Matsu and Quemoy. The Taiwan Strait is about 180 kilometres wide and the islands of Quemoy and Matsu are under the jurisdiction of the Republic of China.

Many major rivers weave their way through Fujian including the River Min Jiang, which traverses the province to the north, and the rivers Jinjiang and Jiulong which have many falls and rapids. The climate in Fujian is subtropical with temperatures in the winter averaging 8 Celsius and climbing to the high 30s in the summer. Typhoons are a feature of the province, gathering momentum over the warm Pacific before sweeping ashore.

Eight of the top twenty shoe manufacturers in China are located in the Fujian region, which has in recent years benefited greatly from its close proximity and associations with Taiwan.

Fujian is served by a number of major airports and they are:

  • Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport,
  • Fuzhou Changle International Airport,
  • Quanzhou Jinjiang Airport, and
  • Nanping Wuyishan Airport.

Fuzhou Changle International Airport handles about 6.5 million passengers each year and more than 200,000 tonnes of goods. From the airport it is possible to connect directly to forty-five airports including international airports in Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.
